www.clearstart.co.uk – Some of society’s most vulnerable people are increasing the chance that they will need debt advice by not having a bank account. However, according to Consumer Focus’ new report, On the Margins, they are not to blame and it is the banks that should be helping them avoid falling into debt. Their figures show that nearly a million adults in the UK do not have any form of bank account, meaning that they risk falling into a debt spiral by not being able to pay for bills via Direct Debit, which is cheaper than paying in other ways. They also miss out on the convenience of cash machines and a safer form of money management. Increasingly, it will disqualify them from many jobs as by 2018, only 2 per cent of employers will pay their staff in cash. All these issues increase the need for a debt solution, such as a debt management plan or an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA). For those owing a few thousand pounds, a debt management plan will restructure the debt so that monthly repayments are lower. With an IVA, those with over £15000 of debt can find respite and ultimately become debt free within five years after paying back what they owe without putting them home at risk in the same manner that bankruptcy does. However, crucially, to get a debt management plan or an IVA, people need to get a bank account of some form, as debt repayments are made via standing order. A Debt Management Plan or DMP is a solution used to reduce the monthly repayments on all of your unsecured debt. Your creditors are asked to accept lower payments and to make other concessions too, such as freezing interest. With debt management, you agree to pay a regular monthly amount to a debt management company. This company will deal with your creditors on your behalf, negotiating new repayments, usually at a much lower amount but over a longer period. If you have debts over £3000 and can make a regular monthly payment, a Debt Management Plan provides a way to become debt free within a set period of time. However, it is worth remembering, a Debt Management Plan is generally only considered a solution for people who find themselves in short-term financial difficulties or have debts of less than £12000.
